Cameras Used by HydraYak Outdoors

Ready to start recording your outdoor adventures? Here’s a good place to start. When it comes to filming “live action” video, the quality of the picture and sound are very important. No one want’s to see a poor quality video… unless you capture vid of Bigfoot. Then everyone wants to see it. So when you’re filming outdoors, go with HD quality cameras. 1080p has become the standard. The lowest you can get away with is 720p. Anything lower and you won’t be happy with the video quality. Also when looking for a kayak fishing camera, waterproof features are recommended. But not required. Dry bags and Dry Boxes can be used to protect your cameras while out on the water.

GoPro for Kayak Fishing

A GoPro can shoot amazingly high quality video and the lens is outstanding. Resolution and fps (frames per second) functionality of the GoPro make it a top notch option for kayak fishing. WiFi capabilities and being able to activate the camera by remote is popular in kayak fishing. This allows the angler to mount the camera anywhere on their rig and effortlessly activate record. Most YouTube videos made by kayak anglers contain GoPro footage. Set the camera to 1080 HD and 60fps, then slow it down in a video editor to capture amazing slow motion video. The GoPro Camera is the darling of the adventure sports videography movement, but they aren’t the only game it town… You can’t go wrong with this as your primary camera option. As with anything, if you’re new to adventure sports and videography, I’d recommend that you go with a cheaper option. Cheaper in this case means lest features, and easiler to learn how to use. It takes time learn the functionality of live action videography and the higher end camera you get… the more functionality you get. I currently use use the HERO 4 Black Edition. Prior to 2016, I used a GoPro HERO 3+ Black.

Nikon Nikon CoolPix AW120

Nikon CoolPix AW120 kayak fishing camera

The Nikon CoolPix AW120 is kind of like the Swiss Army Knife of cameras. I love it, and use it currently for many of my videos. It’s not a tool that is 100% at any given task, but a warrior in the field.

Here’s a look at the Nikon CoolPix AW120’s technical specs as a “camera”;

  • picture quality is really good but not great (16MP, which is solid)
  • the video is really good but not great (1080 Full HD)(The Hybrid VR system helps eliminate bumps and shakes… big plus for live action)
  • wide-angle (24mm equivalent) f/2.8 NIKKOR glass lens is great, but GoPros is better
  • STEREO sound better than most live action cameras
  • the zoom, meh… 5x. But us kayak anglers don’t need a huge zoom

Here’s where the Nikon CoolPix AW120 excels in the kayak fishing world;

  • All things consider above, it’s a good quality camera that can capture great content!
  • Waterproof… huge
  • Shockproof… huge
  • Freezeproof… huge
  • 3″ LED Backscreen
  • Battery Life – Outstanding (Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL12)
  • WiFi/Bluetooth… Sinc it to your device, pull/dump images, control functions
  • Pictures can be scrolled by flicking the cameras to one side or the other
  • This camera can edit/enhance images, add filters… this feature is fun

  • GPS
  • World Map
  • Subject Tracking

All of these factors make it a ruggedly dynamic option for kayak anglers. I use this camera for how to’s or sound sensitive content. I can jump in the ocean and swim with it or using it in a torrential downpour. Fish guts all over my hands, not a problem. Wash it off after the trip. This camera can be mounted to a screw mount… which can be used with a trac or Ram Ball system.

Olympus PEN EPL6

  • 16 Mega Pixel Live MOS sensor
  • 3-Axis In Body image stabilization
  • Interval shooting mode plus Time Lapse movie
  • ISO range from 100 to 25,600

The Olympus PEN E-PL6 is a fantastic option for still photos. This is a well made camera. It’s got good weight and feels like a quality machine in hand. This camera is easy to use, but has pro-level options. The color ranges that you can get out of raw photos are diverse and lend well to post photo editing in Adobe Apps. On the E-PL6, you have all of the manual controls that a large DSLR would have. Like the DSLR, you have the option of utilizing a wide range of lens options. However the Olympus PEN E-PL6 is very compact, and is a great option for outdoor adventures. I use this camera for a wide range of outdoor activities; camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, off road and much more. This camera is not water or earth proof. So dry bags or boxes are needed to keep water and dirt out of the lens and camera bodies.

DJI Mavic Pro

Quickly becoming our favorite camera, the DJI Mavic Pro is a beast. 4k video, .jpg and raw capabilities, autonomous flight controls make for some sick outdoor video. The aerial field of view that a drone can provide adds a whole new dynamic to outdoor videography. HydraYak Outdoors on YouTube recently released the videos Kayaking Tybee Island 2017 – GKF Camp N Paddle and DJI Mavic Pro Kayak Wilderness Flight 1.

The DJI Mavic Pro is a small yet powerful drone that turns the sky into your creative canvass easily and without worry, helping you make every moment an aerial moment. Its compact size hides a high degree of complexity that makes it one of DJI’s most sophisticated flying cameras ever. 24 high-performance computing cores, an all-new transmission system with a 4.3mi (7Km) range, 4 vision sensors, and a 4K camera stabilized by a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, are at your command with just a push of your thumb or a tap of your finger. Powerful Fly for miles. From your pocket. Inside the Mavic’s pocket-sized remote controller is DJI’s brand new OcuSync transmission technology, with a range of 4.3mi (7km) and Full HD 1080p video streaming. No bumps and scrapes When you know what’s in front of you, you won’t bump into it. The same is true of the Mavic. Using FlightAutonomy it can see obstacles as far away as 49ft (15m) in front, so that it can fly at up to 22mph (36kph) while avoiding the things it sees. Absolute Precision FlightAutonomy technology means the Mavic can hover precisely in more environments, and automatically land almost exactly where you took off. Stay flying longer Why fly for 10 or 15 minutes when you can fly for up to 27? With the Mavic you can. Use every single pixel The Mavic is the only drone of its size to carry an integrated high-precision 3-axis mechanical camera stabilization system, giving you crystal clear photos and smooth videos, without losing a single pixel. Creative True 4K video. No compromises. Fly by phone And More…
